I was going to write a whole background for this newsletter, but I’m tired. So let’s just jump in.
I rewrote the lyrics to the patriotic song “America (My Country, ‘Tis of Thee)” as an Asian American lament, protest, and activist song. I did this in response to increasing anti-Asian racism in America, as well as just the growing sense of otherness I’ve felt since the 2016 election.
One interesting (and important!) fact. As I was researching the original song, I discovered an abolitionist version of the song that also rewrote the verses. I was greatly inspired by that version, and I want to give credit to that beautiful song/poem as well.
Below is a screenshot that juxtaposes the original version with my Asian American version. I think it’s the best way to experience the song. Feel free to hum along.
My heart has been heavy and aching seeing all the lives being lost from COVID-19. It has been doubly weary because of the rising racism against Asian Americans.
As Americans and especially as Christians, we have to speak out against racism. We must fight xenophobia and expose it to the light. Would you consider signing the Statement on Anti-Asian Racism in the Time of COVID-19? (Image credit: Angela Lowe)
It is a small step, but one that we can combine with thousands of others to create a loud voice for change. Here’s the link again.
Here are two COVID-19 tweets to make you feel a little bit better.

Something a little bit lighter (which is weird, since it’s coming from Batman).
I’m here for you. Let me know if you need someone to listen. Als, sign the statement. And if you haven’t yet, subscribe to my newsletter below.
